SPORTS AND DEVELOPMENT

In this sector DVA has two programs:

  • Sports for Change
  • Coach & Play

SPORTS FOR CHANGE Is a program geared towards empowering community women and girls groups in informal settlements (slums) through sports by providing innovative solutions to psycho-social and economic challenges, fighting for basic rights, gender equity and acceptance of diversity; to encourage participation to sports as a means of self empowerment.

COACH & PLAY offers loads of opportunities to coach and play competitively the sport of your choice. You can coach as a full time placement, or alongside teaching another subject. We have a huge variety of sports you can coach in different parts of Kenya. The volunteer chooses dates and length of program!
Coaching and Playing Sports is fun for everyone, but also extremely beneficial in building team spirit, communication and leadership skills.

COACH & PLAY VISION

At DVA we are very passionate about developing sports, providing children around the country with the opportunity to receive good professional coaching. In all of the areas we work be it rural or urban setting where we work, there is a lot of raw talent that often goes unnoticed because they do not have the opportunity to be exposed to sports or have proper coaching to allow them to go on and potentially make a career from sport or play at a high level. We are very dedicated to exposing the children we work with to a variety of sports through our volunteers coaching the children.

As a  Sports volunteer you will be doing your bit to help these children and community's through developing and coaching your sport or a variety of sports. Doing a sports project with DVA will not only benefit the community's you will be volunteering in but hopefully benefit you as well and add to your sporting knowledge.

SPORTS & SOCIAL CHANGE IN THE SLUMS

Current statistics show that over 60% of Nairobi’s population lives in slums. The settlements lack space and opportunities for recreational and sports activities in particular for women and girls. The public spaces are mostly unsafe and dominated by the male population. Women are not encouraged to practice sports or develop their talent.

Sport for social change is a powerful tool for effecting lasting social change in the society. Through sports, we are able to bring individuals from different walks of life  to take active part in discovering and addressing issues that face us our day to day living, more so promote peace and understanding

For individuals they achieve personal abilities, general health and self knowledge. On the national level, they contribute to economic and social growth, improve public health, and bring different communities together. And on the global level, sport and physical education have a long-lasting positive impact on development, public health, peace, and the sustainable management of the environment

In Kenya the percentage of youngsters that indulge in drugs and crime is high, the risk of rape, teenage pregnancies, early marriages and school drop outs are high. The most affected, vulnerable and at risk are young women. DVA has managed to address  issues above  through sports for change program.
