VOLUNTEERING [CODE: DVA/VOL]

DVA offers local and international volunteers the opportunity to participate in our community based projects within international work camps. The projects are organized with members of the host community mainly in rural villages and sometimes in city slums. They last for 3 weeks during the months of April, July, August and December.

WHAT IS A WORKCAMP?

A work camp is a place where people from different races, nationalities, live and work together providing manpower/labor for a period of 3 weeks or more (depending on the nature of project) on a locally defined project organized by a host organization.

WHO IS A VOLUNTEER?

A volunteer is a person who inputs his energy, time, knowledge and skills without being compelled for the welfare of a particular cause.

QUALIFICATIONS /SKILLS REQUIRED

• Must be at least 18 years and above

• Full of energy and enthusiasm

• Open minded and willing to enjoy simple living conditions while accommodating/respecting the Scio- economical /cultural differences

• Flexibility is paramount

• At least a working knowledge of English

• Good people skills

• A positive attitude is absolutely vital willingness to teach, be taught sensitive and Independent and have a proactive personality to planning, development and completion of projects.

ACTIVITIES DURING THE WORKCAMP

ACCOMODATION

Accommodation is organized by the host organization and is usually in classrooms, huts (African traditional houses) host family in the community or any given structure found in the host community setting.

FOOD

Local Kenyan dishes.
Food will be prepared in turns (in accordance to our duty rooster) vegetarian meals will also be provided.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

ARRIVAL

We advice our volunteer to arrive a day prior orientation day for a familiarization tour of the city center and its environment.
Please note that we hire taxis/cabs for your pick up (from the airport) so it will cost 1000ksh for this services (this from the airport to your host family or hotel) this is payable to the driver after the service.

NOTE: Work Camp Is Done In Collaboration With Local Authorities, Government And Other NGOS The Locations And Project Activities Are Subject To Changes Please Be Flexible.

EDUCATION AND COMMUNICATION OF NATURAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE

We organize education sessions where we provide opportunity in the local communities to acquire knowledge of our natural and cultural heritage as it is critically important to ensure that the present and future generations embrace the conservation ethics.

Some of the activities undertaken under this program are planting trees, cleanup exercises, recycling, eco- tourism, protecting green spaces etc., as well as cultural excursions, visits to places and people who can transmit traditions we want to protect.

We seek participants who have knowledge in environmental and cultural conservation, who are interested in having a role as facilitators, or who have skills in writing / photographing / taking videos etc. and help us to gather material for communication and campaigning.
